As the summer emerges, casting its warm rays upon us, pre-medical students like you find themselves at a crossroads—a unique juncture where ambition meets the desire for a much-needed break. As a Pre-Med myself, I have crafted an ideal bucket list that may work for you as well—a roadmap that encompasses the significant milestones on your medical journey and the joyful experiences that will rejuvenate your spirit. This is not just a list of tasks to check off; it's an invitation to step outside our comfort zone, embrace new experiences, and cultivate a holistic approach to our pre-medical journey. It allows you to discover new interests, nurture relationships, and make lasting memories that will enrich your life both inside and outside your medical pursuits.

Finding the delicate equilibrium between work and relaxation during the summer break is vital to nurturing your well-being and maximizing your productivity. As a pre-medical student, it's no secret that the journey is demanding, requiring dedication, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to the studies. However, it's equally crucial to recognize the significance of taking time for yourself, to recharge, and to engage in activities that bring you joy and rejuvenation.

Remember that relaxation and fun moments are not distractions from your goals but rather essential components of a well-rounded and fulfilling life. By embracing moments of leisure, you replenish your energy reserves, sharpen your focus, and cultivate a sense of balance that will serve you well throughout your pre-medical journey and beyond.

   The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a crucial milestone in the journey toward medical school. Depending on your college year (junior), Use the summer break to dedicate focused time and effort to MCAT preparation. Consider enrolling in a comprehensive review course, utilizing study guides, and practicing with sample tests. Set specific goals for each week or month, allowing yourself enough time for content review, practice questions, and full-length exams.


b. Pre-Med Courses:

   Take advantage of summer courses specifically designed to bolster your pre-medical knowledge and skills. Look for programs offered by universities, online platforms, or reputable educational institutions. These courses can cover a wide range of subjects, from anatomy and physiology to biochemistry and medical ethics. Engaging in these academic endeavors strengthens your foundation and demonstrates your commitment to lifelong learning and academic excellence. For context, I myself picked up Biochemistry as a summer class as soon as it opened up. Not every college offers a broad class like this during summer, so keep checking for other options like anatomy or physiology, etc. 


c. Research Opportunities:

   Consider participating in medical research or research with your teachers during the summer, as it can provide invaluable insights into the scientific process and enhance your understanding of medical advancements. Explore research programs at universities or seek opportunities in laboratories or medical institutions. Engaging in research allows you to develop critical thinking skills, gain hands-on experience, and potentially contribute to scientific publications or presentations. 

This summer, I am participating in research with one of my teacher. It will build your relationship with the teacher, which also helps you in the networking part of the summer activity.

Or if you know what classes you are taking after summer, you can go over some topics to have some basic knowledge about the subject. 


e. Professional Development Workshops:

   Attend workshops, seminars, or conferences related to the medical field. These events offer opportunities to learn from experts, network with professionals, and gain insights into different specialties. Look for conferences hosted by medical associations, universities, or healthcare organizations. Participating in professional development activities demonstrates your commitment to your future career and exposes you to the latest medical advancements and trends.

Some medical college offer guidance for young incoming or interested physicians, which is a great tool to use if you have a medical college in mind that you are interested in joining. 


Remember to set realistic and achievable academic goals for the summer. Develop a study schedule, create a conducive learning environment, and track your progress. Stay motivated by rewarding yourself for milestones achieved, seeking support from peers or mentors, and maintaining a growth mindset.

Or another opportunity comes from the provider you regularly visit; during visits, you can ask them if they allow shadowing, and if they say yes, then you can ask them for the opportunity to shadow them.

   Many healthcare facilities offer volunteer programs where you can contribute your time and skills to support patients, families, and healthcare professionals. Volunteer roles can vary, including assisting with patient admissions, providing comfort to patients, assisting in administrative tasks, or engaging in community outreach initiatives. Prioritize quality sleep to recharge your mind and body. This is a good time to fix your sleeping schedule that sticks by you during class days as well.

Speaking of personal growth, it is essential to learn something new or different that you have planned for so long but did not have the time to work on. That will contribute to your hobby and bring personal growth. Here are some of the ideas I have decided for my summer bucket list.

a.Culinary Exploration:

Discover the joys of cooking and experimenting with new flavors and cuisines. Challenge yourself to learn new recipes, try your hand at baking, or even explore international cuisine. Join cooking classes or engage in culinary workshops to expand your culinary skills and knowledge. Sharing your culinary creations with friends and family can also be a delightful way to connect and create lasting memories. For this, I am using meal kit service to explore different areas of food and get used to executing different cooking styles. 

b.Outdoor Adventures:

Embrace the beauty of the great outdoors by engaging in gardening. I am not a massive garden person, but I am using some herb kits to start my journey. They are aesthetically pleasing and will provide herbs to again incorporate into your cooking. 

c. Blogging

This blog is also something I have been wanting to start for a long time, and I finally did. I am excited to see where it goes along with my journey. In my view, I see this as writing my thoughts like it's my formal journal. So, it also may help with my creativity. 


Exploring new interests and hobbies adds color and vibrancy to your life and fosters personal growth, self-discovery, and a well-rounded perspective.
